In a world where healthy food is expensive and unhealthy food is cheap, Banquet is well and truly in the cheap category.
Let’s consider this food from a marketing perspective…
“Banquet”, in elegant gold lettering on a rich background, along with “The ultimate meal for one”. This is all meaningless spiel. They use the word “Premium”, with this too being a meaningless marketing word. The food is “Roast Style” – what’s that?
The only factual statement on the packaging is the “with” statement, saying the food has beef flavours in it. Marketing guidelines state “with beef” or “with chicken” requires the ingredient must feature in some trivial quantity, but what’s worse here is they’re talking about beef flavours, not beef… hmm.
Ok, let’s look at the ingredients…
Firstly we have colourings in the food. This is a telltale sign of a poor quality food. Dogs don’t really care what colour their food is, so why add it? There’s a number of non-descriptive ingredients, and I would assume the reason is you really don’t want to know what they are. “Humectants” is probably glycerin, used to keep food moist but prevents nutrients being absorbed. Are the preservatives natural? I doubt it. What are the flavours? Isn’t the meat content tasty enough?
This food falls well and truly into the 1 star bucket, being mostly filler (cereals and cereal by-products), with the worst meat slop thrown in (by-products) and the sludge from the meat-churning machine (tallow).
The protein of 24% is slightly over average, but with the fat level being a low 10% I’m guessing the cereal is inclusive of corn (as well as cheap nasties like wheat). They’ve included essential vitamins and minerals, but that’s required by law so expected.
Your dog might survive on such a food, but over the long term I can’t see him being healthy.
But great news guys, the food is really cheap!!
Buy something else.
Good points…
Nothing worth mentioning.
Bad points…
Filler first, substandard meat comes later. Very ambiguous ingredients.
